Hotel on the Rock Zanzibar

I loved the position of this place. Not in the heart of the crowd but not too far from it. We walked for 30 minutes on the beach under the moonlight (full moon) to reach Paje, which has some pretty places for food and activities (5 minutes away by car). But this experience in specific was one the most romantic things we did.
We made friends with the guys that worked at the hotel bar and spent two evenings talking with them, trying to get a better vibe of the island and their culture. On the bad side, I don’t feel cleanliness is their strong point (the bath was a turn off for me). The beach is beautiful here, and you can have the best pina colada and enjoy the shadow from their lounge area. We also had a couple massage at Mama Africa which was close, and it was amazing!!

Located on a beach on the hill away from the noice. Amazing place for a relaxing and secluded stay. Nice garden territory, beautiful view from the room through panoramic windows, friendly stuff.

This was our first hotel where we were staying in Zanzibar. We enjoyed that they gave a bungalow with a stunning view, we think it was the best bungalow on all hotels territory- on the hill with the direct look to the ocean. The Check-in process was rather slow, even though we arrived past our check-in time, they asked us to wait some 40 minutes. Since we are on the holidays, we, of course, didn’t object, especially since they gave us a welcome- drink and we enjoyed it in the restaurant. The room was clean, well equipped. There was one BIG minus- I seriously HATE when hotels try to skim on the bedsheets. The sheets which were on our bed was obviously not changed from the previous guest- it had some nasty brown stains. Was very unpleasant and when we asked the cleaning lady to change sheets- she was very moody and not happy with this request. Please not compromise on the cleanness and NEVER use the same sheets for the next guest, even if the previous stayed only one night. It is very unhygienic. A very big bonus was a tasty restaurant in the hotel’s territory. You must try their grilled tuna- it was the best tuna I had in Zanzibar. The dishes they offered were very beautiful and tasty. A little bit pricey but if the food is tasty I don’t mind. In the restaurant, one of the waiters was really friendly, positive, and attentive, but another one was always very grumpy and not attentive to our requests, every time when he was serving- it didn’t leave complete satisfaction feeling.I know that many people complain about their breakfast, but if you are not a big eater, then you will not be hungry, it is actually quite a nice breakfast, everything for a perfect morning start. One more thing that I want to mention- their beach is not very clean, it has lots of dirt, please, clean it once in a while to provide a better experience to your guests, especially now, during the pandemic, when you don’t have that much work, spend these working hours in cleaning the environment around the hotel’s territory, your guests will appreciate it.

This hotel is a little piece of paradise right by the beach. The flowers and palm trees adds to the amazing atmosphere.
The owners are really lovely and helpful, and the staff is just as great.
I really like the restaurant menu (ask to get the chips extra crispy 😉
To mention one drawback I do wish there was a stable WiFi-coverage all over the hotel, not just in the bar.
All in all an amazing place. I hope to return to this cozy little Eden on Earth!

Paradise. Gorgeous secluded location right on the end of Paje beach. Hotel premises very beautiful- covered in tropical flowers and well maintained. Rooms comfortable, if a little on the basic side.
Food and service was all very good.

Fantastic food & great atmosphere. Cocktails could be presented in a more appealing way and ensure full glasses…

Hotel with individual bungalow, good king size bed, big shower, AC, and balcony.
Very kindly staff, absolutely safe and not deep ocean.
It’s very good choice for not expensive accomodations.

Tried to cancel my booking with the property due to the uncertainty surrounding Covid-19. Must say that it is quite disappointing when coming across a property that still expects you to pay cancelation fees even though the situation is completely out of your control. It is not the travelers fault that the booking had to be canceled which would then be understandable.

Clean rooms. Nice outdoor areas. Friendly staff. Excellent food. Fair prices.

We stayed here for three days and three nights in August. We arranged for a hotel shuttle pickup from the airport. The cost was $90 and that includes a return trip to the airport as well.

Our driver was Mr. Smile. He was very friendly and courteous and knowledgeable. He would drive and accompany us for our booked activities and tours for the rest of our stay there.

My complaints are: public toilet by the restaurant is not the best. Some of the sauces (thankfully served on the side) for their dishes are absolutely gross. Thankfully the dishes were fantastic even without them.

We loved this place and so did our friends. I would come back in a heart beat.

I can not comment on the rooms as we did not stay here but the Resturant certainly tops that side of the beach. The prices are reasonable and the food is nothing less than excellent. From that alone I can only imagine their room standards should match. The staff is friendly and really makes you feel welcome. This is one amazing place and definitely worth checking in.

Perfect location, front of beach. Rooms are big, so good with Kids. Restaurant offers fresh and tasty food. Everybody make us feel like home. Big big thanks To all staff and owner👌for sure Will Come back!

The hotel is amazing. Great location, great staff and food. It is very clean.

There is no wifi in the rooms neither in the rest of the hotel, just in the bar. They have 2 wifi connections, one that reaches the entire hotel, but the hotel staff refuses to provide the password. So you just have acces to the other wifi connection that just works at the bar.

Impossible to swim on the beach. Impracticable and full of seaweed. You have to walk a hundred meters to be able to swim.

They tried to charge us more money several times. During the check out we had an argument with them for $10. A nonsense for both of them and also for us. We left the hotel with a really bad feeling.

There is no TV in the rooms. There is no hot water in the morning to shower.

There is no kitchen service in the hammocks, you must go to the bar and bring the food / drink.

They do not put water bottles in the rooms. They charge it at 2 dollars when you ask for it.

The hotel is very calm. Excessively calm and boring.

It doesn’t have swimming pool.

We booked 3 nights and checked in yesterday. We woke up at 4 am to our neighbors checking up on us after the bungalow next to ours was broken into in the middle of the night and the couple was robbed AT KNIFE POINT in their bed. The windowsonly have screens on them in the bathroom, and the robber cut through screen windows in their bedroom to access. They were not hurt, but security is lacking, they laughed at the story, even though they “patrol” the grounds. Jacob the Manager is on his day off, the owner is missing although phoned, no word from anyone (including the police) in three hours since the incident. No one from the hotel is on the grounds except 3(?) security guards that are obviously ineffective. PLEASE DO NOT STAY HERE. YOU WILL BE THE ONLY ONES AT NIGHT AND WHO KNOWS WHAT THE NEXT ROBBERS WILL DO.

Hotel in the Rock rocks. We have been here for the second time now and it will be not the last time that’s for sure. They renovated the bathrooms, opened a restaurant with an amazing view over the sea and the white sandy beach that feels like flour under your feed. If you want to feel the real Zanzibar vibe, away from mass tourism and relax this is the place to be. It’s the last hotel at the end of Paje that makes it even more special. Not crowded. It’s peaceful and stunning. We are kiters as well. So we unpack our gear in the morning and go kiting just outside our bungalow. Woooow!! Paradise with 25 degrees water temperature all day and night. The owner is super friendly and all the staff are very helpful. See you next time. We loved it and will never forget this amazing hospitality.

This place was amazing. 3 nights of fantastic food, views and atmosphere. The staff (especially Mwisha and Bobo) were amazing. We learned some Swahili and had such a great time in their company. This hotel is slightly south of Paje itself which suited us as it meant the beach was pretty much private, with very few beach boys etc. We would love to come back.

It’s just beautiful here, the staff is friendly and the food is very good, not really suitable for swimming, but everything else is perfect. The room was clean every day and you slept very well. You feel safe here, air conditioning, sea views, peace and relaxation.

Very quiet, heavenly resort. This view from every bungalow on the east coast is unique !! The private beach is really quiet and to relax. The bungalows are very clean !! The staff everywhere very friendly. The restaurant offers in my opinion the best cuisine on the East Coast. The price / performance ratio is very cheap, and you get a lot for the money. We will be back

I was only in the restaurant but I could see that they took care of everything with love and care. A little slower but given the fact that everyone keeps the hakuna matata it’s fast … \ t

We are a family who were assaulted on the night of February 19, 2019 at 4:30 a.m. an individual armed with a knife broke into our bungalow attacked my wife and me there was no security it was the tourists who helped, no reception, no manager, no owner there was no before of staff on site customers alone. imagine yourself in this situation?
the owner came around 9:00 am she promised us and confirmed by email the reimbursement of our stay 1,500 dollars on day-eight no reimbursement.

Great hotel, bungalow in front of the sea. Staff of extraordinary kindness, very good restaurant. I recommend this hotel if you want to have a dream holiday!
